The RepRapPro Mono Mendel does not come with a spool holder for the filament. You have to keep an eye on the filament during printing to make sure it feeds in smoothly and does not get caught up. Mine kept getting stuck on the PCB controller board.
So I decided to design and print a spool holder that can attach on top of the Mendel. This idea only really works for the Mono Mendel. If you have the tri-colour version you will need to come up with an alternative design.
My version here is made in two parts, a bracket and the spool holder. The bracket is designed to clip onto the two top bars and has a raised section to ensure the spool clears the Z-axis stepper motors. The clip can be secured with an M3 nut and bolt. The spool holder attaches on top of the bracket and again is secured with an M3 nut and bolt. The filament spool then slips onto the spool holder and is slightly loose so that the feeding action rotates it.
No more long hours standing in front of the printer. Now I can just start the print job and let it run. Happy days.
I designed the parts using freeCAD. The freeCAD and stl files can be found below. If you make one of these please leave a comment.
